Post-Operative Instructions
Aftercare Instructions for Botox treatment
After receiving Botox, it is recommended to avoid exercising and sweating on the same day to enhance the effectiveness and reduce the risk of injected material dispersing outside the body or shifting away from the injection site. Bruising is a rare side effect that may occur.
It is advisable to refrain from consuming alcohol if possible.
For the first 2 weeks following treatment, avoid skin treatments in the same area such as facials and dermal fillers.
Extractions and Surgical Procedures
After an extraction, it is important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. This is why we ask you to bite down on a gauze pad for 30 - 45 minutes after the extraction. If any bleeding or oozing continues after you remove the gauze pad, place another gauze pad and bite down firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times for the bleeding to stop.
After the blood clot forms, it is important to protect it for the next 72 hours. Please do not:
- Smoke
- Eat hot or spicy foods
- Drink alcoholic beverages
- Suck through a straw
- Rinse or spit vigorously
- Clean the teeth next to the extraction site
These activities will dislodge the clot and slow down the healing process. Only perform calm activities for 3 - 5 days to keep blood pressure low and reduce bleeding. Applying an ice pack to the extraction and surrounding area will reduce pain and swelling. The swelling will begin to subside on its own after 48 hours.
Use pain medication only as directed, and please call the office if the pain is not manageable with consistent use. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them for the indicated length of time, even if all symptoms and signs of infection are gone. Drink plenty of fluids and eat only soft nutritious foods following the extraction. You may begin eating normally as soon as it is comfortable, we advise waiting at least 72 hours.
Gently rinse your mouth with salt water three times a day, beginning the day after the extraction. Mix 1 tablespoon of salt in a cup of warm water, rinse - swish - spit gently. Rinse after every meal to keep food out of the extraction site. It is very important to resume your normal dental routine after 24 hours; this should include brushing your teeth and tongue and flossing at least once a day. This will accelerate the healing process and keep your breath and mouth fresh.
